DR RAMINDER SINGH RANGER MBE - UK

Dr. Raminder Singh Ranger MBE, FRSA is a successful businessman who has been honoured five times by Her Majesty the Queen, four times for Business and once for services to the British Asian Community and was made a Member of British Empire in 2005. Raminder set up his first business in 1987 with a mere 2 pounds capital from a rented room in Hayes and with sheer dedication and commitment, he now runs two of Britain’s fastest growing companies with an annual turnover in excess of 120 million pounds. He did not have an elite education or the old school boy network to back him up. This year the company was added to the Sunday Times most profitable 100 companies in Britain in their “Profit Track 100”. Raminder also devotes his time to benefit society by launching ground breaking initiatives designed to strengthen social cohesion in Britain. Raminder set up the Pakistan, India & UK Friendship Forum, he is the Chairman of the British Sikh Association and the Vice President of the International Punjabi Society of British Isles, the oldest Punjabi Society in the UK formed in 1928.

MR RAJA SINGH LANDA - UK

Raj Singh is 21 and has developed an outstanding range of activities and achievements. Aged 12, he had an unfortunate skiing accident dislocating his hip and consequently undertook five unsuccessful operations and spent four years in and out of hospital. Despite Raj having missing a substantial part of his education due to an unfortunate accident which left him in hospital for 3 years, he now owns his own entertainment company, property management company as well as studying for a full time degree in Business Entrepreneurship at the University College of Wales, and is now completing his third and final year of his current academic studies. Raj stands out from his peer group in a number of ways. Contrary to popular belief due to his accident, he organizes and participates in a number of activities. Raj teaches the main precepts of the Sikh faith to non-Sikh Black Minority Ethnics groups and helps them understand the Sikh culture and belief and more importantly helps others to understand why Sikhs wear the turban. He also has recently organised Punjabi language classes to be help Young Sikhs on a weekly basis.

MR UPINDER SINGH RANDHAWA - UK

Upinder Singh commenced his media career in 2004 as a Radio Presenter for various ‘Drive Time’ shows, it was soon recognised that he was able to deliver more and adapt his approach to various other types of radio programmes. Upiinder's ‘Late Night Love’ show, was so popular amongst listeners, it was carried through to other stations. Upinder also coaches other presenters wishing to enter the radio domain. Upinder has since then had the honour of interviewing many distinguished singers, song-writers, producers, sports people, actors as well as charitable figures. He has progressed to presenting his own show on ‘Sangat TV’ called ‘People’s People’. Recently, Upinder got global recognition when he and the Sangat TV team covered the riots in Birmingham with exclusive footage which was aired on the worldwide media channels including the BBC and CNN.  He promoted the message of one-ness and community cohesion and helped build bridges between Sikh and Muslim communities. This profound act by Sangat TV helped promote peace and prevented further riots after the sad death of three young Muslim men.

BUSINESS MAN - MR ANALJIT SINGH - INDIA

Analjit Singh is the founder & chairman of Max India Limited, chairman of Max New York Life Insurance Company Limited; Max Healthcare Institute Limited and Max Bupa Health Insurance Company Limited. He has been the driving force behind the Max India Group’s sustained growth and success since the mid 80’s. Max India Group’s turnover for the year 2010 was over INR 78,300 million with a customer base of 4.4 million. The total investment in various businesses at the end of 2010 stood at INR 22,500 million. The Group has over 400 offices across India; with people strength of over 73,000. Recognising Analjit Singh’s contribution towards building India Inc., he has recently been awarded one of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Bhushan, by the President of India.

BUSINESS MAN - MR KARTAR SINGH THAKRAL - SINGAPORE

The Thakral Group was founded in 1905 by Mr Sohan Singh Thakral, father of Mr Kartar Singh Thakral. The Group’s beginnings were in Bangkok’s textile trade, operating as Punjab Store they then expanded by setting up operations in Japan and Singapore. Mr Kartar Singh joined his father and in 1952 moved to Singapore. Gradually, Mr Kartar Singh led the diversification of the Group, transforming it into a multinational conglomerate, employing over 10,000 people across 30 countries. Currently, the Group’s businesses include distribution of consumer electronics, IT hardware and timepiece; manufacturing garments; logistics and warehousing; hotels and real estate. Mr Kartar Singh Thakral is Chairman of the Thakral Group of Companies with assets over A$1.2 billion (31st Dec 2010). Mr Kartar Singh Thakral was named Singapore’s Businessman of the Year in 1995.

BUSINESS MAN - MR SUKHPAL SINGH AHLUWALIA - UK

Sukhpal Singh at the age of 13 left Uganda and moved to England, he worked on market stalls in Liverpool Street and Petticoat Lane, and at the age of 18 and was offered the chance to buy a car parts shop that had gone into bankruptcy. He paid £5,000 for the outlet in Willesden, North London, using funds from his father and a small bank loan. That was in 1978. Today the business, now known as Euro Car Parts, has 61 outlets, an annual turnover of £145 million and pre-tax profits of £6.6 million. Its expansion has been funded entirely by cash flow. In the last three years he has opened a 400,000 sq ft National Distribution Centre, eight Regional Distribution Centres, and 25 Branches throughout the UK employing more than 3,500 people.

ENTREPRENEUR - MR BOB SINGH DHILLON - CANADA

Bob Singh Dhillon born in 1965 is president and chief executive of Mainstreet Equity Corp. After graduating from university in India, he went on to complete his master's degree (MBA) at Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario. Bob Singh started selling homes from the back of his car at the age of 19 and was a millionaire by the age of 21. He now owns more than 6,000 rental properties across the country in addition to his 2,700-acre island in Belize. He also has an orphanage programme in Belize. His company buys, renovates and manages mid-market rental apartment buildings, mostly in Western Canada, that tend to attract young families. Mainstreet Equity Corp is the first Indian-owned company to be listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Harvinder Singh runs PSI inCONTROL which is the fastest growing subsidiary of the PSI AG Group of Companies. Harvinder’s businesses ventures and seen phenomenal growth in its order intake from a mere RM 5.7 Million in 2000 to a high of RM 104 Million in 2010 and still growing. The company has already made successful inroads internationally by winning projects amidst global competition in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka and is well on course to become a Malaysian MNC. Sukhpal Singh Gill director of Gill Insurance & Financial Services came to the UK in the 1970s where he pursued his studies in masters of engineering. In 1980 he entered the insurance broking world. He embarked on a long journey starting from knocking on doors to sell insurance, to today where he has collaborated with a Lloyds underwriters to help produce a place of worship scheme specific to Gurdwaras. In 2007 he brought his daughters in his business to help develop the business. SACA - UK

SACA, is a 100% volunteer charity trust. Originally started in 1989 by organising a bike ride from Birmingham to London, has now set the standard for what has become a yearly multicultural summer event. SACA promotes key attributes of team work, fitness, safety and seva all in aid of numerous national children’s charities. In the 22 years that SACA has been around it has raised nearly £250K benefiting children in the UK providing a better quality of life and care. The gratitude of the organisers goes to the now thousands of ordinary participants who take part each and every year, without whom this would not be possible.

SIKH AID INTERNATIONAL - UK

The late Dr. Manjit Singh Bhogal was the founder and chairperson of Sikh Aid International, with headquarters in Birmingham, serving those in need in developing countries like India, Indonesia, Africa and Pakistan etc. its mission is to save and support people from natural disasters with annual eye, dental and orphanage camps. They provide coaching workshops in India. Sikh Aid holds several workshops and health clinics inviting individuals from diverse communities to collaborate in making a difference. Wholly run by volunteer professionals, who fund their own air travel to take part in this Seva. Sikh Aid is developing its own Sikh model of Coaching and Therapy, that people from all walks of life can clear their path to life fulfilment, and do selfless voluntary service in return (Seva).

SIMPLY EQUAL - AUSTRALIIA

With roots from village of shankerpura, Punjab, Ravneet moved to Australia with her parents in 1984. Ravneet began her charitable ambitions after healing from depression and low self esteem and gaining strength to help others through her charity, “Simply Equal” in 2008. Simply equal aims to provide equal rights to disadvantaged females of Indian origin in Australia and India. Simply Equal has aimed to raise awareness towards issues such as female infanticide and foeticide, dowry demands, domestic abuse (physical & emotional).  The charity aims to provide issue awareness structures, mentoring programs, networking opportunities, information and guidance for self independence. Simply Equal will also endeavor to work with Girl orphanages’ in India and supply essential items; build schools for the chosen orphanages’. Ravneet is a strong advocated for promoting the importance of women, self esteem, and empowerment. She is a volunteer for Young Women Christian Association and has also raised funds for organizations dedicated to the personal empowerment of women.

MR SIMON SINGH - UK

After a PhD in physics at Cambridge University, Simon Singh joined the BBC, where he was a producer on Tomorrow’s World and won a BAFTA for his documentary about Fermat’s Last Theorem. He authored a book on the same subject, which was the first mathematics book to become a UK No.1 bestseller and translated into twenty languages. He also authored “The Code Book”, “Big Bang” and “Trick or Treatment?”. The British Chiropractic Association sued him for libel in 2008, and after winning his case he has become a campaigner for free speech, particularly in science. In 2003 he received an MBE for services to science education.

MS RENNU KAUR DHILLON - USA

Rennu Dhillon, has been described as "a woman of many talents". A well know Bay Area resident & community activist, Rennu has been in the United States since 1986. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Pharmacy & Doctorate of Science in Natural Sciences. She was born & raised in Kenya, East Africa and completed education in England. Rennu was academically a brilliant student and placed 1st in the Coast Province of Kenya and 2nd overall in the country in the high school examinations. She made several contributions to news publications during her academic years and began writing poems and articles at age 8. Founder - Miss.Rennu Online - first worldwide interactive early learning website Genius Kids was started by Rennu Dhillon in the San Francisco Bay Area, in 2001.  The center has won numerous awards and has been recognized as being "The School That Shapes Tomorrow's Citizens".

PROFESSOR PAL SINGH AHLUWALIA - AUSTRALIA

Professor Pal Singh Ahluwalia is Pro Vice Chancellor and Vice President of the Division of Education Arts and Social Sciences at the University of South Australia. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and was appointed a UNESCO Chair in Transnational Diasporas and Reconciliation Studies in 2008. Pal Singh sits on the Board for the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA), Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH) and the Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts. He is the author of many books and articles, his most recent book is Out of Africa: Post-structuralism’s Colonial Roots, published by Routledge (Sept, 2010). He is the co-editor of three Routledge journals: Social Identities, African Identities and Sikh Formations.

MR HARJIT SINGH HULLON - MALAYSIA

Harjit Singh Hullon, 57, was awarded the title by the Malaysia Book of Records on January 25, 2011. As the 'longest serving television news presenter' after working 38-years with RTM. Harjit Singh joined RTM as a radio deejay in 1972. The bilingual newscaster, known for his flawless Bahasa Malaysia and English, won the inaugural Infor­mation Minister's Special Award at the Angkasapuri Awards presentation ceremony in 2006. Harjit Singh will be retiring this year but the father of two has no plans of sitting back and relaxing, saying that he wants to give back to the company that made him who he is today. He is a regular and familiar face to viewers of RTM in Malaysia as well as being the only Sikh newscaster on the channel.

MR WARIS SINGH AHLUWALIA - USA

Waris Singh Ahluwalia was born in Punjab, India in 1975. He is an American Indian actor and jewellery designer. He immigrated with his family to the United States at the age of five, and grew up in Brooklyn. Now based in New York he has had a number of roles in Hollywood films like 'Life Aquatic', and in many commercials. He became a celebrity in the Sikh community after his last role in the Hollywood flick, 'Inside Man' by Spike Lee. For a year and a half Waris Singh helped a non-profit organization to increase HIV/AIDS awareness in South Asia. Making regular trips to India, specifically Mumbai, and worked on prevention efforts through educational campaigns. Waris Singh is in the movie, 'The Darjeeling Limited' starring Owen Wilson and Adrian Brody directed by Wes Anderson.

MRS GURMEET KAUR SODHI - USA

Gurmeet Kaur Sodhi is a television host/producer and one of the youngest Sikh females to launch her own talk show. She is an icon in the international entertainment communities. In recent times she has become known as somewhat of an ‘Indian Oprah’ among the south-Asian community worldwide. Gurmeet Kaur was recently invited by the President of United States of America - to attend a special reception at the White House. This is the first time an Indian talk show host was invited to such an event at the White House. Her invitation to the reception is a testament and recognition of her work in the community. With almost a decade of experience as a talk show host, Gurmeet Kaur is known as one of the most influential woman in the south Asian media. She continues to empower women and give back to the community through her philanthropic work.

MR HARJINDER SINGH BASIALA - NEW ZEALAND

Harjinder Singh Basiala was born in the village Basiala (Punjab). He is chief editor of the Punjabi Herald, the first Punjabi daily online news portal in New Zealand catering to the needs of millions of Punjabis living in New Zealand. A graduate of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Harjinder Singh joined Ajit Group of Newspapers, Jalandhar and worked there for 14 years in different capacities till 2007. His pursuit for Punjabi journalism and specialty in graphic designing, ultimately led him to launch the first daily online Punjabi news portal in New Zealand and he is serving the Punjabi online readers with latest and best news and views from around the world.

MR RAVI SINGH - USA

Ravi Singh is the CEO and founder of ElectionMall Technologies, a pioneer company in the field of online politics. Ravi Singh is the first American with a turban to graduate from a US Military Academy and the first Asian American and Sikh with a turban to run for office in the 42nd Illinois General Assembly. He has dedicated his life to the promotion of e-democracy, which earned him the name of Campaign Guru. Singh has been profiled in Business Week Magazine and many others and has served as technology adviser for current Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, among other world leaders.

MR SURJIT SINGH GHUMAN - UK

Surjit Singh Ghuman, at the age of 29, became one of the youngest Sikh magistrates in Berkshire. In 2000, he launched world’s first 100% Panjabi radio, Panjab Radio. It is now Europe’s biggest Panjabi radio station on Sky and the DAB platform. Surjit Singh has delivered cohesion-related initiatives to facilitate social encounters for good causes. Since the launch, station has fronted a number of charitable causes including building 103 permanent homes in Gujrat and paying for the education expenses for 100 school children in Panjab just to name a few. He was on the fund raising committee for Thames valley adventure playground a centre for the disabled children in Taplow Berkshire for 10 yrs. April 2009, Surjit Singh was recognised with an award for Panjabis in Britain. Panjab Radio’s services have brought significant benefits to Panjabi culture globally and made an important contribution to the development of economic, social and the cultural fabric of the UK.

COUNCILLOR MS BALVINDER KAUR SAUND - UK

Councillor Balvinder Kaur Saund was born in India then moved with her family to Nairobi, Kenya. Currently, she is a retired Local Government Manager, having worked in London Borough of Tower Hamlets for 30 years as Senior Manager, and been an active Trade Unionist, founder of its self-organised groups campaigning for equality for women and minority groups. She founded 'Sikh Women's Alliance' in 2000 of which she has been its continuing chair, empowering and inspiring women to education and training through holding events, seminars and conferences. In 1996 she was recruited as a Magistrate and now she chairs the Remand Courts, and in 1999 she was recruited to sit as a Lay Member on Employment Tribunals in her trade union capacity. She also sits on Police Misconduct Panels and other voluntary groups. In 2006, she was elected Seven Kings Labour Councillor, and worked as the Group Secretary and now she is Deputy Leader of Redbridge Labour Group. All her work in her life has been towards Sikh community empowerment and understanding of Sikh identity by the mainstream.

DR JOGISHWAR SINGH - SWITZERLAND

Dr Jogishwar Singh is the first Sikh to have been selected by the world renowned Rothschild Group in Switzerland as a Managing Director. Born at Khanna (India) in 1951, Dr Singh served in the IPS and IAS before leaving India in 1984, a year of cataclysmic events for Sikhs in India. He restarted his professional career from scratch in Switzerland where his previous experience as an IAS officer had no resonance at all. M.Sc (Hons School) in Physics, M.A. in History from Panjab University Chandigarh, Dr Singh did his D.E.S.S. at Sorbonne in Paris, followed by a PhD from Ruprecht-Karls University in Heidelberg, Germany. Dr Singh is fluent in eight languages and has basic knowledge of two others.

MR JASPAL SINGH BINDRA - HONG KONG

Standard Chartered Bank's headquarters in London's Aldermanbury Square has installed a life-size bronze statue of its Asia CEO Mr Jaspal Singh Bindra on the eighth floor of the building. Jaspal Singh was appointed to the board of Standard Chartered Bank as group executive director in 2010. He joined Standard Chartered Bank in 1998 as head of corporate and institutional banking and has always held senior positions in the group. Before joining Standard Chartered Bank, he was with UBS investment banking. He began his career with Bank of America in 1984 and worked across treasury markets and consumer banking in India and Singapore. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant and holds an MBA.

MR AMRIT PAL SINGH - INDIA

Amrit Pal Singh is based in Chandigarh, India, is the founder of Retired Sikhs, created for the entire Sikh community worldwide where they are connected for life for free, their problems are solved and ideas are shared. As of today, Retired Sikhs is the largest online global platform in the world to network with retired Sikhs from 28 countries and over 150 cities in India. Amrit Pal Singh retired himself is still working on this seva and many more charitable causes are planned for the next year. Amrit Pal Singh’s achievements have recognised across India by all major media organisations.

MR KULVINDER SINGH SIHRA - KENYA

Kulvinder Singh Sihra was born in Nairobi Kenya in 1969. He operates a successful business in construction of office interiors and fabrication industries in Nairobi. He is the present chairman of the Ramgarhia Youth Association (RYA), a subsidiary of the East African Ramgarhia Board and has been actively involved in social and community work from the age of 23 as a general member of the RYA and has since served in the capacity of honorable secretary and treasurer before being unanimously elected as chairman in 2005. He has been intimately involved with RYA and has been the team leader in organizing many social events for fund raising, sports & religious events, installation and commissioning of water boreholes in semi arid dry areas in the country, blood donation camps, food donations to famine stricken and slum areas all over Kenya, medical and educational assistance to needy individuals.

Jasmeen Kaur has been very fortunate over the years to work with and learn from many dedicated sevadars in organising regular Gurmat Sangeet’s and Sikh history events for Sydney’s Sikh youth and in representing our community in multicultural and multi-faith forums and charitable projects. Her ultimate goal is to enable our own and following generations of young Australian Sikhs to worthily inherit and bear aloft our faith and our identity in the complex and multifaceted society in which we live – to humbly serve and proudly represent Sikhism wherever she goes.

MR HARBHAJAN SINGH PLAHA - INDIA

Harbhajan Singh Plaha born 3 July 1980 in Jalandhar, Punjab, India in a Ramgarhia Sikh family is a Professional Indian cricketer. A specialist bowler, he has the second-highest number of Test wickets by an off spinner. Harbhajan Singh made his Test and One Day International (ODI) debuts in early 1998. He is established himself as the team's leading spinner and he is the first Indian bowler to take a hat trick in Test cricket. Harbhajan's success to a work ethic that includes a three hour training session in the morning, followed by an afternoon session lasting from 3 pm until after sunset. 13 years after he made his debut, 10 years after he cemented his place in the squad, he is the 11th bowler in the history of Test cricket to claim 400 wickets. Harbhajan Singh was a major contributor to the Indian cricket team’s victory during last years world cup.

MR MANJEET SINGH DEGUN - UK

Born in Kenya Manjeet Singh emigrated to England in 1979 and has been involved in hockey for over 30 years, with his first success at the age of 17 winning the prestigious Gold Cup with Sikh Union Hockey Club in Nairobi, Kenya. He continued with hockey in England with The Barford Tigers based in Birmingham and then moved to London for his university education, he then played in the London league, which was considered to be the top hockey league in England. Manjeet is currently at Barford Tigers as a Player and Coach. This is his 32nd season with the club and is currently managing the 1st team which is enjoying its 20th season in the England National League.

MR NUVRAJ SINGH BASSI - CANADA

Born in Vancouver in 1983, Nuvraj Singh is a defensive tackle who is currently plays for BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. He was drafted 43rd overall in the 2005 CFL Draft by the Lions. He played college football for the Oregon Ducks and previously played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Montreal Alouettes. Nuvraj Singh Bassi made history as the first turbaned Sikh in the Canadian Football League (CFL), when he made his June CFL debut as a member of the Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders.
